Today we listened to the first two chapters of the Outsiders in class and we had a very good chat about how life was different in the 1960's as compared to life today. We also had a great discussion about how the author is not glorifying the bad habits of the lifestyle lived by the characters in the story but rather how she wants to focus on that it is good to have friends and a strong support system, but you cannot lose yourself in the group. It is vital that you maintain your individuality and that you make choices that are approrpriate and right.
I passed out three sheets that introduce the story and the author and on the final page there were 5 questions that are meant to help guide the students into the real meaning of the story. Please answer these questions for homework tonight.
I also gave every student a snap shot of each of the main characters and asked them to use the information given by Ponyboy in the first two chapters to write a brief character sketch for each. THIS IS NOT FOR HOMEWORK!!!! Time will be given in class tomorrow to work on the character sketches.
Thank you,
Mrs. Asselin
